AASL Standards and Competencies


The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has established national competencies for candidates pursuing certification as a School Library Media Specialist.  The goal of the AASL is to ensure that media center programs are developed that will "ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information."  The School Library Media Specialist must take on several diverse roles in order to accomplish this goal.  The AASL has organized these competencies into the four standards listed below:
