Program Goals

My personal learning goals for this program:

  • How to become a Media Specialist;
  • How to become a teacher of knowledge (and a teacher in general for that matter);
  • How to become an effective locater, finder, and user of information;
  • How to effectively teach students to be effective locators, finders, and users of information.

How I've met my goals in this program:

  • By successfully completing this entire program and graduating;
  • By making all A's in the School Library Media courses and the Big 8 Assessments;
  • By completing an Internship, which gave me the hands-on experience necessary for this profession;
  • By interacting with my mentor and all my peers (big thanks to Kate Hoppenrath) in cohort 6 for ideas and inspiration.

How this program has prepared me for the future:

  • By allowing me to complete real life projects that can be easily used in my future career;
  • By providing the support and structure needed to attain the most effective knowledge necessary;
  • By hearing real stories from persons in the field as to what and what not to do in your career;
  • By offering a flexible cohort schedule which afforded me the opportunity to complete this program.

My future professional plans:

  • To be the best Media Specialist and teacher I can possible be;
  • To make good, beneficial changes to the media program at my new school, South Hall Middle School;
  • To continue being a life-long learner and eventually pursue a Specialist degree;
  • To always know that a love of reading is the heart of an effective media program.

Unique characteristics:

  • Before completing this program, I had an eight-year career in banking and finance;
  • In April 2005 I successfully donated my left kidney to my father-in-law;
  • My little brother is a United States Marine serving at the US Embassy in Berlin, Germany;
  • I love running and have completed four full marathons (that's 26.2 miles each in case you don't know).

My life goals:

  • To spend the next 30 years working as a Media Specialist;
  • To never stop learning;
  • To always stop and smell the roses;
  • To be the best wife I can be to my husband Matt.

How I met the Department's diversity requirement:

  • Through a one-year employment as a Special Education Paraprofessional assisting students with learning disabilities;
  • Through observations and classrooms visits to schools who had significant Hispanic and Southeast Asian populations;
  • Through my internship at a school where 42% of the students are on the free/reduced lunch program;
  • Through the completion of an Exceptional Children course taught through Northeast Georgia RESA.
